New Government Seniors Website

The province has launched a new “seniors website ” to provide seniors and their families with better access to information on available programs and services. Healthy living and sport minister Ida Chong announced that seniorsbc.ca can now quickly locate up to date information about topics on healthy living, transportation, finances, continuing education, recreation programs and volunteer opportunities.

This website looks to be an exciting and quite comprehensive source of useful information – including financial information. One area it does not cover though, is to provide guidance as to how to protect the subsidies by controlling the taxation of investment income. If you would like to set up an appointment with a professional advisor to make sure that you are not sacrificing the income you earn on the proceeds from the sale of the family home, especially when moving to assisted care, click here.

A report released by the Alzheimer Society today to mark Alzheimer Awareness month reveals alarming new statistics about the projected economic and social costs of dementia in Canada. Here in British Columbia, findings from the national study indicate that if nothing changes over the next 30 years, the prevalence of dementia in the province will more than double from 2008 figures (almost 70,000) to an estimated 177,684 British Columbians living with the disease. The associated economic burden is projected over the next 30 years to reach a cumulative total of over $130.2 billion. For the full report, click here.

One of the toughest issues related to Alzheimers can be the simple question of “Who pays for the care?”. It seems a simple question, but the answer can be a real challenge - Protecting the family finances, and taking advantage of the government subsidies usually requires care and help.
