Guaranteed Income Supplement:

The Guaranteed Income Supplement provides additional money, on top of the Old Age Security pension, to low-income seniors living in Canada. To be eligible for the GIS benefit, you must be receiving the Old Age Security pension and meet the income requirements explained below.

Senior’s Supplement:

The Senior’s Supplement is a provincial monthly payment provided by the Ministry of Housing and Social Development to seniors whose total income from federal pensions or other earned income falls below a level guaranteed by the province.

Effective October 2005, seniors receiving federal Old Age Security (OAS) and the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) are eligible for all or a part of the Senior’s Supplement, depending on their total income.

Canada Pension Plan – CPP:

Your parents’ contributions to the Canada Pension Plan provide them with a stable and dependable pension you can build on for retirement. Their contributions also provide them and their dependents with basic financial protection if they become disabled or die.

Old Age Security – OAS:

The Old Age Security program ( OAS), which is financed from general revenues of the Government of Canada, is the cornerstone of Canada’s retirement income system. The OAS pension is a monthly payment that goes to almost all people aged 65 and over who have lived in Canada for a minimum period of time.

In this respect, the OAS is different from the Canada Pension Plan ( CPP). People pay into the CPP when they work, and the Plan provides payments to workers and their families.
